Diesel Fuel Contamination and Precautions

The common rail engine technology in our diesel vehicles significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, but relies on the use of clean fuel that meets regulated New Zealand standards. Diesel fuel systems can be susceptible to costly damage if fuel quality falls below the regulated standard. This can be due to contamination from water, diesel bug or other contaminants. Hyundai New Zealand does not have direct control over the quality of fuel entering your vehicle, and therefore damage to your vehicle from fuel contamination is not covered by your new vehicle warranty.

This should not be a major concern for you if you are, or are thinking of becoming a Hyundai diesel vehicle owner. There are just a few things you need to know to avoid this issue. Some common questions and answers, along with further information about Diesel Fuel Contamination are shown below.

What is Diesel Fuel Contamination?

Diesel Fuel Contamination is the presence of any minor or unwanted components in your diesel fuel, including water, rust, diesel bug, petrol and any other foreign objects or material and is the result of poor quality diesel fuel entering your fuel system.

What would my vehicle be doing if Diesel Fuel Contamination was present?

Vehicle performance problems can range from intermittent lack of power, rough running, engine hesitation, increased fuel consumption, possible excessive smoking and stalling.

I own a diesel with no issues but is there anything I should be doing to minimise risk?

  • If possible always fuel with the same fuel provider and choose larger more reputable fuel stations
  • Do not fill your vehicle from anywhere but a reputable fuel station e.g. from a farm tank
  • Retain fuel receipts in case you need to pursue the fuel provider for a contamination claim
  • Check with your insurance provider that diesel fuel contamination is covered by your policy
  • Regularly service with an Authorised Hyundai Dealer and ensure you stick to your scheduled service intervals
  • Avoid fuelling when the service station is being refilled/has a tanker on site
